The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recently bestowed the 2024 Luella Klein Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Ernest G. Lockrow, professor emeritus in the Department of Gynecologic Surgery & Obstetrics (GSO) in the Uniformed Services University (USU)’s School of Medicine (SOM), at the Annual Clinical and Scientific Meeting Convocation.

The Luella Klein Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually by the Council of District Chairs to honor an ACOG Fellow who has dedicated their life to women's health in a significant way. The award recipient is nominated by their District Chair and is selected by a committee of past Luella Klein Lifetime Achievement Award recipients.  The award is named after Dr. Luella Klein, a pioneering obstetrician-gynecologist who was the first woman president of ACOG in 1984. Dr. Klein was a champion for women's health throughout her career, and her legacy is honored through this award.

Lockrow is a highly respected obstetrician-gynecologist who has made significant contributions to the field of women's health throughout his career. He is a pioneer in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and performed the first total laparoscopic hysterectomy in the military in 1998.

In addition to his clinical work, Lockrow is a passionate educator.  He served as GSO department vice chair from 2012 to 2013, founded the only DoD fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, and served as the fellowship director from 2010 to 2012. He is also an active member of ACOG, AAGL (originally named American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists), Association of Professors of Gynecology & Obstetrics, and the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons.

“In addition to being a dear friend, Dr. Lockrow is what I call a ‘quadruple threat’,” says Dr. Eric Elster, dean of USU’s School of Medicine. “An outstanding teacher and mentor, he is also a highly gifted and innovative surgeon, a caring and compassionate physician, and an inspiring leader. It was a great privilege and pleasure serving alongside Dr. Lockrow, and I'm delighted to see him recognized for his exemplary career and service.”

“Dr. Lockrow's receipt of the Luella Klein Lifetime achievement award is a testament to Dr. Lockrow's extraordinary career of service in Gynecologic Surgery and Obstetrics,” says Dr. Monica Lutgendorf, chair of USU’s GSO department. “Dr. Lockrow is a nationally and internationally recognized educator, mentor and robotic surgery pioneer. Through his service in ACOG, Dr. Lockrow directly impacted national organizational recommendations regarding simulation programs and recommendations in medical simulation training. Throughout his career, Dr. Lockrow has exemplified humility and a commitment to lifelong learning. Dr. Lockrow joins a select list of individuals who have received this award, including Dr. William Haffner [chair of GSO from 1992-2003], who received this award in 2021.”
